Sea Turtles
On the 3rd of December 2000, at Saints Landing the largest turtle of the season to date came ashore,
weighing 63 pounds and measuring nearly 55 centimetres carapace length.
This critter - with a missing right rear flipper and a 26 centimetre bite ripped out of its right rear
quadrant - this turtle had been the victim of a shark attack.
Close inspection of the wound clearly shows the outline of the shark's tooth notched in the shell. From the
extent of healing and parasites, such as mussels growing in the wound, we can deduce that the turtle survived
the shark strike that occurred at least some time in the past. Unfortunately, exacerbated by cold-stunning,
which dropped its internal body temperature to 39.4°F, this loggerhead did not live through the night.

Fake Attack Picture
|
Fake Shark Attack Photo
The above picture was taken in San Francisco Bay. It's a composite of a U.S. Air Force photo
of an HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter during a rescue diver training session and a still shot of a
great white shark breaching the ocean surface by acclaimed underwater photographer Charles Maxwell.
The shark image came from footage shot in False Bay near Cape Town, South Africa. The cut-and-paste job
first began circulating in August 2001, when sharks and shark attacks were very much in the news because
of the widely publicized mauling of eight-year-old Jessie Arbogast off Pensacola Beach, Florida.

Shark Breach
|
Shark Breach
The above picture was taken by Charles Maxwell an underwater cinematographer based in Cape Town, South Africa.
A keen diver and lover of the marine environment for 35 years.
"I love this shot. It was taken in very low light and is not too sharp-but is the highest breach that I have ever seen. The white shark's (Carcharodon carcharias) large, powerful, equal-lobed tail and wide caudal keel allows it to achieve bursts of speed sufficient to launch it this far from the water."
-Charles Maxwell.
