Nicolette Raleigh a 15 year old girl was attacked by a shark off a south Maui beach. The young girl and
her friends where just joking about been attacked by a shark 15 minutes before it happened. They talked about
the discovery of the shark-bitten body of a man in the same area days earlier, but she never thought it would
happen to her, Raleigh said.
State and federal officials said based on the description of the attack at Big Beach; they believe the shark that
attacked Raleigh was smaller than the one that bit San Jose resident Anthony Moore. Moore had been killed the week before
while free diving.
Raleigh said she kicked the shark with her left foot and ran out of the water with help from a friend;
the shark had bit her on the calf. The attack left an 8-inch-long wound that was deep. Nicolette said the
shark was gray with a round head and about 8 feet long.

North Shore Surfer Attacked
In March 2006 a female surfer was attacked by a shark at Leftovers Beach on the North Shore. The shark
had bit the surfer's leg, she was rushed to Kahuku Hospital. Lifeguards have posted shark-sighting warning
signs between Laniakea and Waimea. People are being advised to stay out of the area's water,
which is still murky from recent rain runoff.
